Okay, I figured it out.
Its my problem: I didn't comprehend the FreeBSD partitioning requirements. I
was trying to create one 10GB partition, and thats it. However, the installer
would complain saying that my partition is not using the entire disk, and
would I like to adjust the partition size to <value> which would encompass
the full disk. Well, it was asking that: would I like to? But the options it
gave me were: either accept increasing the number of sectors to the suggested
value (all of the disk) or go back to the partioning dialog. So, I actually
didn't have a choice at all.
At the partioning dialog, I tried to re-add my 10GB partition, deleted it,
etc. trying to get the installer to accept my wishes. None of that helped. So
what I did was make a 10GB partition, and then ANOTHER partition with a
sector count of "*" (ie. the rest of the disk). I forgot to give that second
huge partition a filesystem type, which is where the original error message
came from. I took care of that, and the installer proceded.
However, I now have a 10GB partition for pfsense, and a 110GB partition that
I don't intending to use. Maybe it would have been nice to dual boot to Linux
or Windows or something... anyhow, I haven't thought about it and didn't
really want to partition the entire disk.
I wasn't aware that it is a requirement of the installer to always have 100%
of your disk partitioned.

Hi Scott,
I chose a different number of sectors, because I wanted more than a 1GB
partition for pfsense. If that is what causes the problem, okay, I can boot
the CD again and just press "enter" the whole way and see what happens.
I can tell you that the HD is a 120GB drive, and that previously it took the
entire disk for pfsense, and that worked. This time I wanted to partition
just 10GB.
Are you still interested in /tmp, or only if I use the default 1GB partition
size?
Thanks,
Christian

I can't reproduce this. Did you leave the defaults for the partition
scheme?
After the installer fails, please scp the contents of /tmp/ somewhere
and send them to me so I can inspect what went wrong (if you didn't
change the default partition items).

Howdy,
I searched in the Mail Archive list archives and didn't find this
addressed:
I have booted the .94.12 LiveCD and want to install it to my HD. I
formated
the disk and on the "Edit Partitions" screen I have entered the sector
count,
FreeBSD partition type and Active as options. I then "Add"ed the
partition.
It is the only one listed. After choosing "Accept and Create" I am given
the
followig error message:
'' is not a recognized partition type.
Please use a numeric identifier if you
wish to use an unlisted partition type.
The installer fails at this point and wont let me procede.
Hardware is a normal PC with a normal ATA HD. Previously .92.?? was
installed
and running fine.
Thanks for your help.
