I was troubleshooting the same problem yesterday and after a little
digging found this discussion from 2002 in the freebsd-net mailing list:
http://freebsd.rambler.ru/bsdmail/freebsd-net_2002/msg03372.html
The PR filed in 2002 is still open:
http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=kern/41632
Looks like the code responsible for discarding the packets is still in
the RELENG_6 code base: search for "Discard packet if interface is not
up" in sys/net/if_ethersubr.c
If I can get my pfSense development tree working I may try to rebuild
with this code commented out to determine if it fixes the problem.

unfortunately dhcp won't start for an interface with link down state. as your
dhcp is at lan and your link is down... :-/ (btw, it appears that this is
something new in freebsd 6.1).

To add, i have opt1(wireless) and Lan bridged. Once I get an
IP on the
wireless, all else is fine. Maybe I set it up differently?
Not sure anythoughts

I just got this Soekris box running and ill log on wireless.
and it will
start to get an ip but never get an ip. I plugged into the
LAN port, and
boom, now the DHCP is working over wirless. Any thoughts on
this so i dont
have to have something plugged into the LAN?
