For starters Scott, thanks for the immediate reply. ;-)

What i was really asking
,due to that i only have to make only a minor change at pfsense's
kernel make file,
are there any simple steps so i can create the image file i want ?
eg

1)  download developers iso (is this the prefered method for building
a "pfsense
     development system" ?)
2)  run "cvsup script" to sync with the latest sources
3) change the kernel Makefile (This is the only change i want to do )
4) run "compile everyhting / build embedded  image" script

and if this is not the way, are there  any recomendations  on docs to
read, in order to start  learning about the build procees of pfsense?

No there is not.  The build system is unsupported due to its complexity.
