Thanks for the suggestion, but alas, it won't boot. I just says "Read Error" and hangs. Still finding it strange that m0n0wall has no problem booting I imaged the m0n0wall image back to the cf card, thinking maybe it was something with how the bootloader was was installed. I then "dd if=/dev/hda of=m0n0.mbr bs=446 count=1" to write m0n0wall's mbr to a file. Then I reinstalled pfsense from the livecd and "dd if=m0n0.mbr of=/dev/hda bs=446 count=1" to write m0n0wall's mbr to pfsense. Soon as it hits the drive the computer reboots. So, I'm back to square one with no pfsense. Any other suggestions what I could try or why m0n0 boots and pfsense won't?

You can write the embedded image with physdiskwrite just like m0n0. The embeddeds don't support addon packages and will have the shell output at com1 (no video) and will run in RO fs mode. Other than that it's the same like the full version.
