We use pfsense on an Axiomtek NA-1040 with a 1GB CF card and it works
pretty well as a transparent firewall for a single server. Not sure
about the wear and tear on the CF, though, as there isn't much load on
the firewall itself. 

Also, we bumped the memory up to the maximum 384MB allowed on the unit,
so I don't think it's ever going to be in a position where it's
constantly paging out to disk, even when we put more servers behind
it...
