You must give a try using windows DNS server for local name resolution. It´s also an Active Directory requirement. Windows XP try to get the permissions from the shares every time that you access them. It broadcast from network trying to locate permissions. You are maybe accessing them using the guest account. In pfSense use the "Services|DNS forwarder" to say what is your host responsible by local domain resolution (Your domain server in this case). Remeber to tell to your server that your gateway is a forwarder. Also, try use DHCP in your windows server. And setup the gateway and other properties there. It worked fine to me! Before this, windows machines on my network showed the message "Windows could not locate a Domain Server" when user tryed to login ou access shares.
