My question would be why you need GbE interfaces on your pfSense box -
are you really going to be pushing more than 100Mbps? It's not
impossible (quite to the contrary), but especially for WAN links even
10Mbps is often overkill. If you're routing jumbo packets that's
another thing, but those applications are few and far between. I'm
not trying to discourage you from doing it, but you really may be able
to just get away with an old 3COM, SIS, or Intel 10/100 card.

Good Question. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but my motivation for GB
interfaces is to enable the maximum possible capability for this box, which
will be controlling routing and firewall for 3 LANS:
1) a small cluster of servers offering web, database, DNS, and email
2) an office LAN with approx 12 workstations
3) an ISP-style LAN of subscribers , between 30 and 70 concurrent connections.
Connections will need to be authenticated via Captive Portal -> Radius server
I also would like to be running snort on this box and tracking suspicious
activity.

My connection to my external WAN is a GBe connection, that router is a 4.5
Megabit fiber line...

does this seem like the type of thing I should be using PFSense for ?

I'm building this pfsense box on a fairly new HP Server with AMD Opteron 64
1800mhz dual core...

And, a disclaimer, though I know a fair bit about networking, this is my first
time working with PFSense....

thanks
Nathaniel
