I don't think I'd bother trying a different drive, with a server like
that it's really difficult. One thing that just came to mind that you
might want to try is 1.2-RC2. That version of the live CD was the last
to use a SMP kernel (until the 1.2.1 release which will revert to SMP on
the live CD), where releases since then use a uniprocessor kernel.
Strange things happen on some hardware with uniproc kernels that don't
happen with SMP, largely APIC related it seems.
