You have a number of issues.

With the same address range no routing based method will work (NAT ipsec etc.) 
because there is no differentiation between the address spaces.

Only a bridging mode connection would work (pptp) does this but usually it is 
configured with individual clients

Even if you get it to work any duplicate IP addresses would cause issues.

I suggest you change one of the addressing ranges

i have inherited two sites that need to be connected with an ipsec
tunnel -- issue is that each lan on each side of the tunnel is identical
rfc1918 address space (172.16.16.0/16).

is there a way to overcome this with nat -- i've tried everything i can
think of to no avail.
