I did experience exactly the same issues.
This is what I did; - Boot from the live cd using safe mode - Proceed with a regular installation - When choosing the pfSense version ensure you choose the multiprocessor option (think it was the second one) .and that was it. The two Dell R200 I did install pfSense on are now in production and working sharp. I am not sure why these issues appear in the first place, however I suspect that it is due the fact that the R200 has 64bit processors, apparently not supported by the kernel the live cd boots with.
