The only appropriate VPN howto on the wiki seems to be 'VPN Capability
OpenVPN' which I've been through plenty before. With regard to that guide:

- I have my 'Dynamic IP', 'Address pool', 'Local network' and
'Authentication Method' settings the same as those in its 'Certificates on
pfSense' section

- that guide doesn't include a section on setting up OpenVPN client, so is
no help with that side of things

- I don't understand the 'OpenVPN Client Bridging' section and don't
believe I need to, correct me if I'm wrong

- I don't believe I have other subnets I need to push to clients, correct
me if I'm wrong

- it has Gentoo-specific information about connecting. I'm using Debian. I
connect using the same means I've always used with OpenVPN (previously
with IPCop + ZERINA OpenVPN plugin):
# openvpn --dev tun0 --mktun
# openvpn --remote <IP address> --dev tun0 --pkcs12 <my cert + key + CA
cert>.p12 --client --comp-lzo --tun-mtu 1500

I have a propensity to miss the glaringly obvious, and I don't have a
suitable grasp of how the interconnections involved in using OpenVPN work,
but I've been through this again and again, checking all the pfSense
OpenVPN guides I can on the web.

I'd very much appreciate any further help, thanks
