I've had the same issue Sunday. Since the upgrade is disabled, I changed the /etc/platform from embedded to pfSense (this from memory), rebooted, and then upgraded the regular way. I've stayed on the nonembedded platform (albeit changing the / to noatime) but of course it's playing va banque with your flash. You can downgrade back to embedded, IIRC (haven't tried). I've had a couple upgrades in the past where the system was wedged so badly it had to be reinstalled from scratch. But it's been a while. In any case upgrading a remote system hours away from you need to be contemplated.
