Okay, thanks.  This is something I can try and return here with a
definitive "yes" or "no".

Since I am not a Linux guru, I fired up a IBM T42 running FreeBSD
7.0-STABLE.  I don't recall if I tried assigning a static IP address
or not, since this was late in the day last weekend, but using DHCP
(and wpa_supplicant and WPA-PSK) I do believe I was able to associate
with the 4801 running pfSense.  So, that is a second avenue for my
static IP testing.
