Further, CARP doesn't run on a dedicated NIC, pfsync does (and no, it's not required, however it isn't encrypted or authenticated).

No, because it wouldn't work unless you have a 512 Kb Internet pipe or
slower. Serial is *way* too slow to sync states with any modern
broadband connection.
