Is your machine behind company firewall or any firewall? The firewall may
limit the non-http port that MSN default uses. If this is the case, you can
check 'use HTTP' in 'advanced' tab of the 'modify account' dialog.

Also MSN service occasionally disconnects if the traffic is heavy. Just
connect some time later.

And, you may also want to check pidgin log file for a clue why it can not
connect. I am afraid I do not have a linux box at hand so unable to point
out the exact location. Supposedly it's somewhere under ~/.purple
