You can have pidgin auto join channels when you log into an irc server. Just right click on a saved irc channel from the buddy list and choose 'Auto Join'.
I've made my own plugin where I can run irc commands on startup, depending on what irc server you specify. I found this particularly useful when channels need invite keys. Ie: /msg Bot invite #channel $CHANNEL_INVITE_KEY I haven't really made an interface for it, just for my own use. But I probably will eventually. Right now, you have to add the irc command in the code and recompile. If you are comfortable with looking at C code, I can email it to you. It's a little rough around the edges, but does the trick.
