This is an issue with GTK. There is a file
you can replace in the GTK lib to fix this issue. Search trac for it,
unless someone else gives you the link, let me know if you need more.

The way to disable sounds is with the "Mute Sounds" checkbox
in
Tools->Preferences->Sounds.
If that is already checked, are you sure that these sounds are
actually coming from Pidgin?
