I remember seeing a similar query not long ago, but can't find the link.
Someone more knowledgable on jabberd2 may know a whole lot more, regardless.

It may help to open a ticket [1] and attach a debug log [2] of the WinPidgin
client signing on (or otherwise generating this trouble).

Of course, you have verified that the WinPidgin client can connect to other
XMPP servers? Do you have any low-byte characters in the user name,
password, or status text (see [3], [4])?
