Here is the only error message that I have received. Your suggestion
to add
"talk.google.com" to the connect server field has not worked.

<mailto:[email protected]/> disconnected
Could not establish a connection with the server:
Connection timed out."

This is going to be caused by the network configuration on the VPN
network. Presumably your VPN configuration is such that it becomes
your default gateway and all traffic is routed through your VPN
connection when it is active.
You haven't provided any debug information that would help identify
what the specific problem you're encountering may be, but one
possibility is related to DNS SRV lookups, in which case you can try
entering "talk.google.com" in the "Connect Server" setting for your
google talk XMPP account.
