Are you running Pidgin 2.5.8?  If not, upgrade.  Also, read
http://theflamingbanker.blogspot.com/2009/06/some-clarification-on-yahoo-issues.html
(and note that most of the bugs referenced there have been fixed by 2.5.8, but
the rest is still relevant).
