In the conversation windows, there is the menu point Options / Enable Sounds Also in the preferences (buddy windows menu Tools / Preferences) on the tab Sounds you can enable sounds for differents events.
It is a bit confusing, but I would tick all "enable options" and clear all "mute" options...
