I'll take your word for it on Pidgin, but I agree the server should...
indeed, none of the error logs even prompted the reason for the failed
login! OS X is a great desktop, we have other beliefs regarding their
Server technology, but that's another discussion entirely:)

It's debatably both a server and Pidgin issue. The server should
error when Pidgin specifies no resource, and Pidgin should specify a
default resource for it. Pidgin's part of this will be fixed in
Pidgin 2.6.3.
