If you open the Help->Debug Window when you attempt to connect you should see it indicate some number of failures (to get your hostname or to get your ident etc.). It should then prompt you to send a command to the server, to do this you must open an IM window (to anyone) on that account and send the command indicated. That should, if my quick test is any indication, allow you to connect for the next little bit.
