This is due to a change which negatively affects large IRC channels.
This is being fixed for the next release.
The pidgin SourceForge page has download links for all the old versions.

Hello Etan, I was expecting a .1 release, not another .0. Upgrading as I
type this message.
UPDATE: Upgrade went well, average CPU usage is now below 1.0, memory is 26k
