I've had mixed luck also. It's working for me now, though, which suggests that it's not a problem with pidgin specifically. I suggest you look at your protocol provider and see if you can modify the "file transfer proxy" on the account. I mostly use a google app account, and the proxy for this account is: "proxy.eu.jabber.org".
