Dear Joel, Yes you can do it through plugins as suggested. I use pidgin on ubuntu. In my pidgin version, here is what I do: Go to Tools --> Plugins. There you will be able to see a list of plugins. In that you have to enable Libnotify Popups 0.14 if you have it installed. Then you can see the notifications.
If you don't have the plugin, you can try to find and install this plugin.
