Are you planning on using XMPP? My initial thought when I read your email was, "That sounds like a lot of work... why not just use Google Apps for Business?" (Disclaimer: I work at Google... but I would have suggested Google Apps even before I started working there.)

I don't know... maybe? XMPP is pretty flexible.
