I've actually had this exact same
issue, and I, similarly to you, assumed that the contact was
listing themselves as invisible. She would log in, message me
with "Boo!", and when I would try to respond, I would get an error
message saying that she was offline, so the message could not be
delivered. I actually tried to debug this issue on my own, but I
could not find anything abnormal in the chatter between the client
and server during the times I actually caught the error while the
debug log was open. I wasn't able to really test this out
thoroughly because I can't seem to replicate whatever happened to
her on my list (so I never filed a bug report on it),
additionally, I couldn't easily communicate with her for testing
purposes since we fell back to using email.
Personally, it's hard for me to be too concerned with this, in the light of recent news. If the article that David Woolley informed us of is true, then Microsoft Live Messenger will be no more come March of next year. Which would mean that any time spent fixing whatever part of the protocol that Microsoft messed with to cause this might be wasted effort. I've started talking with my contact over Skype instead already.. unfortunately, I fear that if I don't convince her to use a better protocol (and chat client) soon, that I will strangle myself due to Skype's inferior interface. Honestly though, I'm not certain if this news is completely true. I can't find any statement from Microsoft on the issue, but there are definitely many sources stating this all over the web and it does appear that Microsoft is moving Skype onto their live messenger backend (in an interview with Derek Snyder). Of course, that doesn't imply the messenger live will be shut down. I'm not certain which stance to take on the issue now. I'm not a developer, so my opinions don't carry any weight, but I thought I would give my perspective on the situation in case it might be helpful somehow. There is definitely something wrong, and it seems to be extremely difficult to isolate. I'll be looking forward to hearing more on this as well. What the developers at pidgin think about it, and if it is worth fixing will determine if it is worth hunting down. If it is worth fixing, I'll definitely invest more time in hunting down a proper report on the issue. Thanks for the information! -- Steven Gauna On 12/5/2012 3:35 AM, john hufnagel wrote:
