Hello,

I'm having a problem with Pidgin (maybe). The only time that I can get
new IMs from facebook, gtalk, etc. is when Pidgin is open and connected.
For instance, if my computer is off when a friend sends me a message,
then I turn on my computer and open pidgin, there's no message there.
It's very annoying to have to open the website to check if I've received
new messages. Is this by design? Am I doing something wrong?

I cannot say for sure but this sounds a bit like an issue on server side.

That would be my thought to. Also, it may be a limitation of XMPP, as it is an instant message protocol and store and forward, is really the role of an email protocol (which have existed for decades before IM).

(Services like Facebook blur the distinction, because they want all your communications to go through them, to maximise their data mining, and opportunities to present adverts.

Actually SMTP is perfectly capable of doing IM as well; it just lacks the presence features. I sometimes wonder when IT departments will spot this merging of IM and email and start requiring 20 line confidentiality notices on each IM message!)
