Hello, I am new to Pidgin and XMPP. I am trying to combine my Skype, Facebook, Google Hangouts, and Steam chat using Pidgin. After 2 hours and not being able to connect to anything I'm starting to realize why this kind of thing isn't popular. Am I wasting my time trying to use Pidgin to this end?

Steam chat and Skype are both non-open, non-standard protocols. There is a plugin for Skype that states it should integrate the chat with Pidgin, though Skype has to be running in the background, and isn't officially supported. To my knowledge there isn't a plugin for Steam like there is for Xfire, but I could be wrong.

Google chat should be pretty easy, there's even a protocol option for it in the accounts menu (https://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/Using%20Pidgin#HowdoIuseAIMMSNYahooGoogleTalkJabberXMPPICQoranyotherprotocol ). Facebook should work via XMPP (https://www.facebook.com/sitetour/chat.php ).
