Without knowing your OS it's difficult to provide specific suggestions.
If you're using Windows, try Tools --> Plugins --> Windows Pidgin
Options --> Configure Plugin --> Uncheck "Dockable Buddy List"
Assuming I've guessed your problem from the original description :)
