I have compiled 2.10.11 from source and it is imposible to connect to
the MSN server, either directly or via HTTP (if I mark this option):
$ pidgin -d > p
^C
$ pidgin -d >> p
^C
$ fgrep refused p

refused).
(15:39:17) proxy: Connection attempt failed: Connection refused
(15:39:17) msn: Connection error: Connection refused
(15:39:17) msn: Connection error from Notification server

(15:39:43) proxy: Error connecting to gateway.messenger.hotmail.com:80
(Connection refused).
(15:39:43) proxy: Connection attempt failed: Connection refused
(15:39:43) msn: HTTP: Connection error: Connection refused
(15:39:43) msn: Connection error from Notification server
(gateway.messenger.hotmail.com): Connection refused Connection refused)
It seems that they now have shutdown this service in favor of Skype.
