In Pidgin 2.10.11, SameTime users who are not in my buddy list appear by their uid instead of their full name. The only way to find out who is trying to chat with me is to add them to my buddy list. This appears to be a duplicate of defect #1965, but that ticket was last modified 6 years ago and I do not see a resolution.
