I ended up needing to re-enable "less secure apps" no other solution worked and all the documentation out there seems to talk about Google Apps, not us lowly regular users.

Hi,

You could try to use a specific app password for pidgin, but I'm not sure it will work. You may have to re-enable "less secure apps"

and the note about less secure apps :

    Recently changed my security settings with google to not authorize
    "less secure apps" (whatever that means). Since then, I haven't
    been able to connect Pidgin to GTalk/Hangouts on Win7.
    * I've upgraded to the latest version
    * I've used the Gtalk option
    * Port 5222 (and 5223)
    ... etc.

    Still can't get it to work. Once, I got a window to pop up asking
    if I wanted to accept the certificate - I said yes, but it still
    didn't authorize me.

    What in tarnation is going on. Any ideas on how to get this damn
    thing to work?
