Hi Shlomi,
I did try using XMPP to connect to my Google account, but Pidgin
tells me 'Authorization failed' and I get an email from Google
telling me 'Someone just tried to sign in to your Google Account
adrian...@gmail.com from an app that doesn't meet modern security
standards.' Is there a trick to getting it to work? Or any advanced
settings needed? I tried selecting both the 'XMPP' and 'Google Talk'
options in the Pidgin account setup, but Google Talk appeared to
revert to XMPP anyway, and neither would connect. I do have 'Require
Encryption' set on the advanced tab, and did try changing that to SSL
but then I got 'SSL connection failed'. Any ideas?
Also, you recommend using XMPP as an alternative. But I assume that
needs a server somewhere? Which one would you recommend? Maybe jabber.org?
Regards,
Adrian.

Well, Google Talk/Google Chat was recently rebranded as "Google Hangouts" and
I'm using Pidgin to speak using it without any major problems using Google's
XMPP interface.
Some other alternatives are:
1. XMPP - open source and standard and distributed.
2. Facebook - see https://github.com/dequis/purple-facebook . Works
pretty well
in Pidgin.
