Roads Ruled by Fools and Oafs
The Jakarta Globe, Wednesday, 7 January 2009

What is happening to this city of ours? Authorities are trying to hide their
inefficiency at managing the traffic and public transportation systems behind
school children and office workers? And on the road, has the courtesy that
Indonesians are known to accord to others gone to the dogs?

As a working parent, I now have to wake up at ungodly hours to prepare
everything for my young children’s early school opening hours. It is so obvious
that the city officials who decided on the early school opening hour have never
had to wake their young children every morning and patiently goad them, their
eyes still half-closed, to eat at least half of their breakfast. And so far,
getting the children to school has not been any easier.

Living in a residential complex in a southern suburb, the only way to take my
youngsters to school is by driving them there. If these same officials think
traffic is better earlier in the day, they should check the facts themselves.
It is not.

And they persist in saying that this early opening policy is helping to thin
the traffic later, when workers go to their offices.

Wrong again. Nothing seems to have changed, traffic-wise, when I cross the city
to work.
And my last rant goes to the motorcyclists. There seems to be a complete
disregard for their own safety as well as those of others.

I am not a motorcyclist myself, but I am certain that if I ever was one, I
would certainly keep to the left and not flaunt every single rule in the book,
including going against the flow and running red lights.

Can anyone tell me what is happening?

Suryati, North Jakarta
