Port Authorities Must Be Firm The Jakarta Globe, Tuesday, 13 January 2009
Hello, Jakarta Globe. May I use your newspaper to air my incredulity at the sinking of the Teratai Prime ferry. These kinds of disasters have been going on for far too long. Isn’t there anything the government can do to improve the safety of our ships, especially passenger ships and ferries? The Teratai’s sinking, I am sure, will not be the last disaster to befall Indonesia. Our port authorities must be firm and not allow ships to sail in bad weather or leave overcrowded. We are a nation of islands and sea transportation is vital. Not everybody can afford air travel. Please, give more attention to safe sea transportation. If we cannot improve the fleet of aging ships that now provides the bulk of sea transport, especially in the central and eastern parts of Indonesia, then work on at least seriously enforcing security and safety measures. Losing one life is a tragedy, losing hundreds of lives is plain stupidity. How many more victims do we need for us to act? Or do we need to wait for other countries to ban our ships and boats before we do anything?
