The Indonesian government, in its effort to tackle pollution, is considering plans to reduce the use of plastic shopping bags. But the plastic shopping bag is actually a very useful thing compared to other products made from plastic which one picks up when shopping in a supermarket. Perhaps the government and the environmentalists should target the use of plastic pouches and containers which are to package products. For example plastic containers and pouches are used for all liquid household goods such as cooking oil, floor-cleaners, liquid detergents, cooking oils etc. Plastic bags are also used for foodstuffs like rice, sugar, flour, noodles and so forth. Then, of course we have the famous, or rather notorious, plastic water and soft-drink bottles, which are often found discarded by the roadside. Of what use are these plastic containers and pouches once the contents have been used? There is none, so this packaging becomes totally useless and is thrown out. Why can't the government insist that these containers be made from bio-degradable raw materials? Are there no bio-degradable raw materials? Are they too expensive? Maybe the government can put a total ban on the production and sale bottled water and soft-drinks? "Bring your own water" should be the rule as a corollary to the "Buy Indonesian" slogan being promoted by the Minister of Industry. After all, the raw materials used to make plastic bottles (and other plastic containers) are imported. Perhaps people should be told to bring their own containers to buy liquid detergents, cooking oils, shampoos etc. at supermarkets. The poor plastic bag can be used to collect all the empty useless plastic pouches and containers from the products mentioned above and then left neatly for the garbage collectors.
