Talking about panning techniques, I will be shamelessly self referential :-)
and take the occasion to advertise the work that we presented at last AES in
London:
-Surround Sound Panning Technique Based on a Virtual Microphone Array

We refer to this technique (actually an extreme simplification of a more
complex least-squares problem) as Virtual Microphone Array Panning....and
guess what's the acronym....
I was not aware of this ViMiC, will certainly look into that.
(may I add that I would not consider WFS a panning technique?)
All the best
Filippo
