there used to be a graphical linux tool called polarbear, written by
maarten de boer, iirc. haven't tried to build it in a while, requires
FLTK iirc.

turns out it had disappeared from the net, but the author has just restored it:

lets you drag the poles and zeros around, with instant display of the magnitude and phase response.
