As subwoofers handle frequencies well below 700 Hz, you need a minimum of only three (in a triangle) for horizontal, or four (in a tetrahedron) for full-sphere. Also, the decoder needs to be a velocity decoder, so is about half (the low-frequency half) of a dedicated FOA decoder.
