Though perhaps more surround than most would think. Come with me, here:
if you take a look at the compensation circuitry which turns A-format
into B-format within the conventional SoundField microphone, isn't it
pretty much *exactly* a 3D Blumlein shuffler?
True, at the lower frequencies where the capsule array is (purposely)
small compared to wavelength, the circuitry just equalises a bit. But
higher up, especially upwards of 10kHz, when we start to see real
antiphase behavior between and around the corners of the capsules (i.e.
higher order directional aliasing as well), the design criterion ought
to become very much the same as it does with a Blumlein pair and the
shuffler.
I mean, the first physical design criterion is the same, and so is the
secondary psychoacoustical one. Only the dimension remains dissimilar.
How could it not be about the same principle?
Fons, even if I'm wrong here, I'd appreciate if you'd tell me/us why
that is. Because after all the SoundField did came from lower
dimensional Blumlein theory, originally, and this explanation of why a
shuffler might be needed is the best I've come up with thus far wrt the
SoundField mic. Even if I'm wrong, I'm pretty sure the following
discussion could lead to something good which I've not seen talked about
before.
Alternatively I'd like to hear from them rest of the Italian sounding
guys, like Fazi and Farina. You three seem like the Three Kings in
sorting this sort of stuff out at the physical level. Maybe I can then
translate some of it towards those who're more interested in how stuff
actually sounds like -- even if my hearing is a bit compromised. ;)
