This is an example of a more general problem; how to control the downmixing of multi-channel sound files into stereo. I proposed a solution, similar to the Replay Gain standard, to the Xiph crowd in March 2011 but got no interest. To show what I had in mind, I created a draft for WAVE-EX files which you can still see at: http://members.tripod.com/martin_leese/Ambisonic/StereoMix_chunk.html As most listening to audio downloads appears to take place on stereo players using ear buds, the need for this looks like a "no brainer" to me.
