People will always tell you you need more speakers, but you could do some great stuff with 12 speakers. Im just building my own portable setup myself . If your using max you could easily combine ambsonics with VBAP for spacialisation. For software that works with max I would recommend ICST, Spat or wigware (I think wigware would work using the VST object)
