I don't have an 8-channel HDMI box to plug it into. I am on a tight budget here (as schools may also be).

Probably - it's just Linux. Jack is available via apt-get, haven't tried ambdec yet. I am sort of waiting for someone with a higher budget or more kit to play with to confirm that this or that setup works. I still need to find a USB powered hub before I can try any m/c card. Many are reported to have compatibility or other problems.
