This remark surprised me, so I checked. Chambers Dictionary gives only the fully accented spelling, mêlée; Shorter Oxford gives mêlée first, but melée and melee as alternatives; Wikipedia gives melee as the title, but says that mêlée is frequently used in English; the "Oxford Dictionary of English" gives only melee.
So, any spelling is acceptable in English, it seems, which is in keeping with the nature of the language.
