"The thing that is really annoying, really frustrating, is that the
community that I am trying to serve (which includes me) keeps shooting
itself in the foot, incessantly, year after year, by arguing over the
same details, over and over and over." ED, Sunday.

At the risk of another abortive cycle.

We seem to have:

Richard Dobson's *.amb
Widely used, widely accepted.
Problematic as order number increases.
Has the underlying *.wav problems (and advantages).

Etienne Deleflie's 'UA'
I had thought this had been dropped in favour of
the fourth of these, so have rather taken my 'eye
off the ball'.
Perhaps Etienne could comment (he is one of the
author's of the fourth).

The Graz Proposal of 2009.
This fell on stoney ground ;-(>
It was CAF based, and we did have promises of
a 'CafPak' from the 'WavPak' development team.

The Kenticky Proposal of 2010.
The current situation is:
a library available at
<http://iem.git.sourceforge.net/git/gitweb.cgi?p=iem/ambix;a=summary>
and the unofficial documentation at
<http://iem.at/~zmoelnig/libambix/ambix_8h.html>

I'll happily put up a webpage with URLs / links
to them all (and any others).
Even try a Wikipedia type table of 'what does/offers
what' (if the authors will assist).
(And genericlly these re not 'file format's so much
as 'interchange formats' (files, streams, ... .)

Once we've got the facts straight perhaps we could
recommence on a solid basis ??

A couple of comments in the meantime:

OPERATING SYSTEMS:
I remember going into an office some decades ago
and being greeted by "Have you seen what's in the
paper about the Soviet Union?". To which I gave a
bored reply of "Nothing we didn't know already."
The wiser man replied "It's not what they are
saying, it is who is saying it."
I have always read 'news' stories differently since
then.
So was surprised by the 'main stream' comments on
Microsoft's tablet/OS.
Anyone remember 'Internet Explorer' ? 'Windows' ... ???

Anyway regardless of the fate of M$, nowadays
I regaularly use at least two OSs. Depends what's
better for what.
It is easy to boot a Linux off a USB key, off a CD,
or dual boot off a HD.

I am not convinced OS remains a big argument for
desktop / laptop machines.
'Mobile devices' are perhaps the issue that will
be the big one.

B-FORMAT:
As far as I am concerned A-format is a microphone
feed. C is any of the flavours of UHJ. D is
loudspeaker (etc.) feeds.
A does not specify what sort of mic. D does not
specify how many LSs or in what configuration.

Likewise B is an encoded format (produced from
A or 'composed'). It may be any order (or
'mixed' order). It may be Furse-Malham, but
may not be. The term is generic.

I say all this as some comments seem to imply
B-format is *.amb- Whilst *.amb is B-format I
would not agree with the reverse. (Nor, if I
read it correctly one comment that seemed to
mply B-format is first order ..)
