Optical focus? Tuning of multiple strings to avoid beats? Stretching of strings (slack...taut...broken). Some would say most physical processes are non-linear to some extent; outside the region of an "attractor", all sorts of nonsense breaks out. Add human ears and turbulent air into the equation and it is a wonder anything works at all.

Sometimes we want a little fuzziness - "Hollywood Magic" = vaseline over the lens, n'stuff.
