In that case the path of least resistance probably would have been to slave the word clock of one converter to that of another, and put in an alignment pulse. That way the converters would stay phase coherent despite clock skew, and you could achieve perfect alignment later on using the calibration signal.

Of course unless the F1 was expressly designed to accept an external clock, that would mean touching the internals of a still rather expensive unit...
