Anyone noticed the fact that Barco Auro 3-d has purchased Isosono. Could be
interesting.

I didn't notice yet, and many thanks!
Here a complete link (link above is broken):
http://www.barco.com/en/News/Press-releases/Barco-gains-the-team-and-expertise-from-IOSONO-GmbH-to-further-enhance-the-immersive-sound-experienc.aspx
Founded in Erfurt, Germany, in 2004, IOSONO quickly became the
technology leader in 3D audio. The company specializes in object-based
sound rendering in various professional applications, including
cinema, by incorporating distance data which takes the simple panning
of sound around a three-dimensional space to the next level.
To reproduce distance data is not as straightforward in Auro-3D (or
Dolby Atmos) as in a WFS system. Nevertheless, there are methods to
include at least some distance cues. (We had some discussions here.)
Galaxy Studios is renowned worldwide for its state-of-the-art
leadership in audio innovation for music and sound for film.
I agree that Auro-3D looks like a convincing discrete format for music
recordings. (And which is already used for music recordings.)
You can see Auro-3D as a 5.1/7.1 format extension < with height >.
Backward compatibility to "film/surround standard audio" ITU5.1/7.1 is
kind of built-in, therefore. (The format looks arguably "light"/economic
if compared to 22.2 as supposed standard configuration for UHD TV. Of
course they will be able to < reduce > 22.2 to other configurations, but
this also implies they will have to support some format changes -
probably employing rendering via VBAP.)

Best,
Stefan
P.S.: Another question would be if 22.2 would perform better than
Auro-3D in listening tests. (In practical terms, 22.2 recording would be
a lot more difficult to record. See Theile-Wittek paper...)
P.S. 2: Dave, it is Auro-3D or Auro 3D... Don't want to seem too
pedantic, but this is the way they spell it. ;-)
